Talking Back, Part 1

I come from a family that did not use the term "talking back."

So I'm not entirely sure what it means.

Landon is getting in trouble at school for talking back.

So can you tell me what it means?

Is Landon getting in trouble for having and voicing differing opinions?

Or is he getting in trouble for the way he's voicing his differing opinions?

Please discuss, I need the insight.

In my family, it was always because of the way I said things. Shocker, I know...but yes I did get in trouble a lot for "talking back"!

In my experience "talking back" refers to saying something negative or rude in response to something an adult said to you. Such as they ask you to put away your toys and you tell them "no, I don't want to" or "you can't make me".

Talking back, mouthing off, being rude, not doing what is asked of them.

It is not a good thing in my house. BUT, he is three right?? kind of par for the course...

Talking back is when I lay down a requirement/rule and the response is "You don't know everything, mom!"

I don't like the simple arguments (I don't want to, wwwhhhhyyyyy, etc.,) but I don't think that classifies as "back talk" until it is crosses over from voicing opinion/feelings into just plain being snotty.

Oh, I am an expert on this. I was ALWAYS in trouble for "talking back" as a kid! Basically, expressing your opinion in a rude way, or being argumentative. At Landon's age, however, I doubt it was intended as talking back...seems a little young for that just yet.
